Our San Francisco Weekend

We headed out of our little nook in California and set out for our weekend destination... San Francisco.  Never been?  Well, put this one down on your list!  We left Friday afternoon, and arrived after a mere 3.5 hours.  And boy, was that short drive worth it.  I immediately thought to myself, why did we wait so long to come here?

My girlfriend, Katie, was in town with her boyfriend, Luke, and we got to meet up and get some much needed Meg and Katie quality time in.  Oh how I missed her.  She's such a dear friend to me, and I hate that we never get to see each other.  But this trip is just what the doctor ordered.  I rebooted my hard-drive and feel so rejuvenated.  There's nothing like getting out of town and refueling with good friends.  And Emmy became Luke's little buddy too.  He carried a backpack and Emmy always knew he had some kind of fruit hiding in there.  And she'd eat it all up in the blink of an eye.

We stayed at the Marine Memorial, a really neat, historic hotel that's right in the heart of downtown.  And the complimentary breakfast on the top floor had an amazing downtown view splashed with rigid sky scrapers, trolleys heading up and down their rails, pedestrians pounding the pavement, and even a view of the Golden Gate bridge nestled in the distance.  And the breakfast buffet was magnificent.  Nothing like starting the day with all of my favorite breakfast foods at my beck and call.  And all I have to do is grab a plate.

The sidewalks were packed with people, but somehow we managed the double BOB stroller around.  And it was actually quite the necessity.  The air was a cool 50 degrees or so during our stay.  I'm sure it was actually chillier than that.  The streets were drenched, the air was crisp, the wind was fierce, but can that kind of weather really stop something as important as... shopping?  Fortunately for us, the rain let up every now and then.  But let's be real... no it cannot.

We spent Friday and Saturday shopping and walking through downtown.  We arrived just in time to see the ginormous Christmas tree being lit from a balcony at the Cheesecake Factory.  We even got a closer look at it while next to the outdoor ice rink.  There's something so spectacular about those tall Christmas trees.

The kids did pretty well with the hustle and bustle of shopping. The stroller took turns with Wade and I as we would hold Brenner for a bit while he was bored, and then strap him back in for some more strolling.  Emmy also took turns back and forth, riding and walking.  The busy city isn't meant for a 15 month old that doesn't walk.  Poor little guy just wanted down and wanted to explore and play.  But you just can't do that in the middle of Williams-Sonoma or in the middle of the flooded sidewalk.  So, it got a little old for him.  But Wade gets a HUGE gold star for entertaining them the best way he knew how while Katie and I slid down to the basement of DSW and rummaged through clearance shoe racks.  That fantastic pair of boots that I'm looking for... well, I haven't found them yet.  But I did find a fantastic pair of skinny jeans to wear when I do find those boots.  Skinny jeans 1  Boots 0

Saturday afternoon we piled in the car, 4 adults and 2 kids, and traveled to a faraway land called, Sonoma.  No, it was actually a really short 1 hour drive.  But, wow did the scenery change.  It was just gorgeous.  Wine country.  I've never been to a vineyard, so I can cross this one off my list too.  Those clouds held up for us as long as they possibly could.  I at least got to snap a few pictures here and there in between showers.  We went to the Cline Cellars that is settled on 350 acres.  We didn't get to venture much because of the weather, but I'm sure the huge estate would be glorious to walk through.

Once the rain hit, we hid under a tent for refuge, while Wade took Brenner to the car for some playtime and I chatted it up with some friends of Katie's.  The car... a wonderful world of exploration.  For the time being, it was his only world of exploration.  It's tough being 1.  Thanks to Cline for sneaking something kid-friendly into a vineyard wine tasting.  Birds.  And lots of them.  So we snuck a peek.

Brenner always finds something more interesting behind us to stare at.

Next, we headed to Viansa Winery and Vineyards.  I knew we had to hit this one as we were driving into town.  We were all deciding which one to choose, and I mentioned that I wanted one that was beautiful and Italian-inspired and would be perfect for pictures.  I looked out the window to my right, and Viansa was it.  There's a warm Tuscan feel to this vineyard.  Even with the dark clouds tucked in around us, I knew this would be a sight to be seen.  We made our way to the tasting room, snapping a few pictures along the way.  Wade and I tasted a few wines.  The reds were a little bolder than I prefer, but tasty nonetheless.  Dad, I'm sure you would have loved it.  Emmy met a new friend (Katie's friends' little one), a little 5 month old named Lydia.  And she became Lydia's best friend.  So she was very well entertained.  And Brenner was tossed back and forth between me and Wade, our game of hot potato.
Me, Emmy, Katie, Melissa and her baby Lydia (or "Olivia" as Emmy liked to call her after one of her fave shows)

We grabbed pizza afterward and made our way back to downtown San Fran.  The 4 of us woke up Sunday, had another fulfilling breakfast and jumped in the car and headed to the Golden Gate Bridge.  We finally got some nice weather, but the wind met us with guns blazing.  We took turns snapping pictures.

I know.  Emmy looks thrilled, doesn't she?

Mine turned out fabulously well.  (read sarcastically)  The first one he snapped, my eyes were closed.  The second one... I guess Wade thought this would suffice.  Ugh.  That's why I'm the picture taker.
For the record, I did not know there was hair in my face.  I would have went for a 3rd.

The kids weren't into taking pictures.  But we took theirs anyways.

We headed to the gift shop and Emmy got to pick a San Fran goody.  Her choice... a snow globe.  Finally... a smile.

Then we drove down Lombard Street for the 2nd time.  Wade got a kick out of going down the street.  He turned the 4 wheel drive on so he wouldn't eat up the brakes.  And he literally didn't have to brake once.  I laughed, cringed at the tight turns, and was in awe as we literally drove "down" this windy road.  It's a short residential street that is the "most crooked" road, which I would actually hate to live on.  Not only because I drive a Nissan Armada and would indeed crash and scrape my car at each cement barrier or play the game of reverse, drive, reverse, drive, and would ultimately get stuck and be unable to get out.  But the tourists line up and down the street taking pictures.  And that would just be crazy everytime you stepped out your door.  But it's a cool attraction and I'm glad we did it...twice.

The above picture I found online.  Just to show you the crazy zig-zags.

And that was our San F trip in a nutshell.  We had fun catching up with friends, ate well, got to cross a few things off my list, and saw amazing, breathtaking sights.  San Francisco... I hope to see you soon.  Please send a postcard to remind me of your beauty that's only 3.5 hours away.  Until next time...

November... Gotta Love It

I love Novembers.  They've always been my very favorite.  It might have something to do with my birthday at the end of the month... 27 on the 27th this year.  It might also have to do with good ole Turkey Day.  Any excuse to overeat and gather with friends and family is a good holiday to me.  This year, we're not going to be with family, but we do have some fabulous friends that recently moved to Nevada.  And they graciously invited our family circus over to spend Thanksgiving with them.  And they just had a baby girl, yet another reason that I am dying to go see them.  It's been a long while since I snuggled a newborn.  And Emmy misses her dear friend, Evey.  They are great friends.  And they've actually introduced us to our wonderful new friends that live around the corner from us and they're going to drive to NV as well.  So, it's going to be 3 families, cozying it up for the weekend.  And it's going to be great.

This next weekend we are road-trippin' it to San Francisco to see my bestie, Katie!  This trip has been long awaited.  She lives in Florida, but is flying in to meet us and it's going to be nothing short of fab-u-lous!!!  Katie and I have been best friends since I moved to Florida six years ago.  We met at Bonefish where we were both hostesses, hit it off incredibly well and have been inseparable ever since.  Then I moved to Virginia and now California, but I still consider her my best friend.  She's the girl I can always turn to and lean on, and I hope that I'm the same for her.  And I've never been to San Francisco and am really looking forward to seeing something other than dairy farms.  Oh that scenery is going to be just glorious.

Then, the weekend after Thanksgiving, the kids and I are flying to Texas and I cannot contain my excitement.  I haven't seen my mom since the summer.  After we got her devastating news, I knew I had to get back, but I just didn't know when.  I literally wanted to hop on a plane with my sister who was in CA with us at the time.  But after talking it over, I held back my urges, and prayed.  I prayed for the right time.  I've talked to her 1,000 times on the phone since then, but seeing her is going to be amazing.  That little piece of heart that broke off during that phone call with my mom as she told me she had cancer can finally be dusted off and sewed back together.  Because my mom mends thing like that...

My mom has got so many wonderful friends doing wonderful things for her and the family.  She has such a gracious friend, Crystal, who takes her to chemo when my dad or brother is not available.  And that is just an amazing gift, to have a friend sit with her and be just that, an amazing friend.  She also has a group of friends that have a rotation of bringing dinners to the house.  And I know that's been a saving grace.  One less thing for my dad or siblings to think about as the day unwinds.  Dinner, check.  And she has other friends that come and visit, whether bringing a favorite dessert or just checking in; and it's all just been a blessing.  And I also have to mention that I have an amazing sister.  She has taken over my mom's childcare since all this happened.  It's been a whirlwind back at home, but Chelsea graciously swooped in and is taking care of business.  She watches 5 kids full-time, and babysits on the weekends.  I know my mom feels so thankful that Chelsea could do that for her.  Chelsea, thanks for taking that on.  It's a lot, and I know you're super busy, but I know those sweet kiddos are grateful to have you.

So after months of talking about it, and changing dates, we decided that December would be perfect.  She'll be on the tail-end of treatments and I'll even be able to see her through her last treatment in mid-January.  And that will be cause for a party.  A big one.

My Husband is Pretty Fantabulous

I knew I had a pretty great husband.  But he finds new ways all the time to be an even more incredible husband.  Wade was in Key West for a couple weeks on a short det with the squadron.  Evidently it's beautiful flying out there.  And I know the nightlife isn't bad either.  So Key West is always a good time.  Well, Wade and another guy were planning on making a short stop in TX before they headed back to CA.  Wade was planning on spending a few days with his family in San Antonio.  Just one of the perks of his job.

The day before he was supposed to arrive in Waco, we found out that my mom was admitted into the hospital.  My mom got pretty sick and they needed to rebuild her from all the rotten side effects of chemo.  I have an absolutely amazing mom by the way.  Amazing.

So, with this sudden news, Wade didn't blink once and decided he'd rent a car and drive down to Austin to be with my mom.  I know, awesome right?  He brought her flowers, gave her a much needed foot massage and had a really great night of chatting.  He even went on a shopping trip with my sister to pick up a few thing for my mom:  super cute and cozy jammies, and fabulous black fur slippers that I knew she had to have.  I wanted so badly to be there with her but having Wade there, that was really the next best thing.  What a nice and unexpected trip.  Thank you to my incredible husband for spending that time with my family.  I am forever yours.

Website for My Mom

My mom's friends, Crystal and Bryan, have created a website Caring for Karen.  It's a work in progress.  I'm still trying to figure it out.  Today I made my first post.  My mom is currently in the hospital.  I will try to update it every now and then on her progress and how she's doing.  But I wanted to give a link, in case you ever want to check in.

We thank you again for all your prayers.  They've really carried my mom through.

Happy Halloween

It's Halloween Day and the kids and I are pumped!  Our neighbor, Sarah, tagged along with us as we tore up the neighborhood.  Brenner cruised around in the stroller.  He was fine for the first leg of our trip, then as it started getting dark, he wanted out.  So, I held him for a bit, but I knew that wouldn't suffice.  We ran into some friends which was a perfect time to regroup.  So I let him crawl around and I gave him a bucket of candy that he had fun dumping.  And then I thought, if Brenner was walking, this would be so much easier.  Back in the stroller he went and the shrill cry came instantaneously.  I'm not kidding.  If you ever lose us at a park, or in a mall, or within a 5 mile radius, never fear.  As soon as the screams hit the air, we will be found.  It's actually quite ridiculous.  I have to hush him all the time.  When he gets mad, oh is he mad.  But he cooled off and it was smooth sailing from there.  Just give the boy a bucket of candy and he'll have fun throwing it out the stroller.

Emmy kept her headband on for the most part.  She took it off a few times, and I sometimes managed to get it back on her head.  She did great saying "Trick or Treat" followed by a shy "Thank you."  She had a lot of fun watching the other kids.  Sarah and Emmy held hands almost the entire time.  I brought the double stroller, just in case Emmy needed a quick rest.  Who am I kidding.  She kept up with the kids.  She noticed Sarah grab a piece of candy, unwrap it, and pop it in her mouth.  So Emmy thought she'd grab a sucker and do the same.  No problem.  One piece of candy.  I can handle that.  Except she wanted to do it again and again and again.  We had a short meltdown at one of the last houses.  The piece of candy she was given at the door, she wanted to unwrap.  "No, Emmy.  You already had one."  The streaming sobs ignite.  "Emmy, if you stop crying and pouting you can pick one more piece of candy out when we get home."  We started walking to the next house and she turns around and looks at me and says in the sweetest little girl voice, "Mom, sorry I was crying and pouting."  That girl melts my heart.

So I would say our Halloween was a great success.  We missed you Daddy!

My friend pointed out to me how cute it was that Emmy was wearing her shoes on the wrong feet after seeing my pictures.  I investigated the above pictures, and finally I had to go look at her shoes.  Then, I looked at the picture below.  Yep.  Sure enough.  Her shoes were on the wrong feet the entire night.  Can't say that I noticed.  But now this picture just makes me laugh.  That's how we do things around here.  We usually have food on our faces, dirt stains on our clothes, sunglasses upside down, and shoes on the wrong feet.  That's how we roll.

Let's Get Girly

Halloween is an excuse for 3 year-olds to wear make-up and curl their hair, and wear the brightest shade of pink nail polish, right?  Well, apparently it is at our house.  As I was getting ready this morning and putting my make-up on Emmy says that she needs to wear make-up too.  She tells me this every morning.  And my friend sent Emmy the most fabulous birthday present, a wooden make-up case with wooden make-up galore:  tubes of lipstick in 3 shades, a palette of eye shadows, a powder case etc...   So when she asks to wear make-up I tell her to go get hers, and we'll do it together.  However this morning when she asked me, I told her "Okay, I'll do your eyeshadow."  So I put a baby pink and a shimmery gold on her eyelid.  And it was fun!  I haven't done someone's make-up since my sister's prom.  And then we finished off the look with some lipstick and instead of lip gloss which I occasionally let her wear, she chose chapstick.  And there you have it.  Perfection!

Then during Brenner's nap, we painted our fingers and toes a striking shade of pink.  Emmy loves getting her nails done.  Sometimes I have to distract her to keep her still.  She'll start fidgeting, and I'll say, "Emmy can you tell me your abc's?"  Then she'll start bouncing along to the song, and I have to change the distraction by asking, "Emmy, did you get a pumpkin at school?  Tell me about the pumpkins."  And then she miraculously stood still and told me a story.

Next, we whipped the curling iron out and did some fun little curls in her hair, knowing that no amount of hairspray could hold these curls long enough for trick-or-treating.  But that's okay, I got a few pictures and she sure had fun posing.

Here she is all dolled up.  Diva-licious!
